How to use the tip calculator

How tipping math works and what’s customary
The tip is simply the bill multiplied by the tip rate: a 20% tip on a $60 bill is $12, for a $72 total. Splitting evenly divides that total by the number of diners. Whether you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a personal choice — tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common and slightly cheaper, but many people simply tip on the total shown for speed.
Customs vary by place and service. In the United States, 15–20% is typical at sit-down restaurants, with 20%+ for excellent service; counter service, delivery, and bars have their own norms. In many other countries a service charge is already included or tipping is modest or optional. When in doubt, check the bill for an automatic gratuityor service charge so you don’t tip twice.
